Are glucosamine and calcium the same?
Glucosamine is not the same as calcium. Over the course of a lifetime, the normal wear and tear of living exacts a price on our bones and joints. As we age, we are increasingly vulnerable to osteoarthritis (OA), which often leads to debilitating pain and discomfort. In fact, one in six Canadians over the age of 16 suffers from arthritis. Glucosamine Sulfate helps to relieve joint pain associated with osteoarthritis. It promotes formation of cartilage and protects against its breakdown.
On the other hand, calcium is a major mineral that is particularly important for growing children and adolescents as well as for older women whose lowered calcium levels put them at risk of osteoporosis. Best known for its role in the formation and maintenance of strong, healthy bones and tooth enamel, calcium also produces hormones and enzymes involved in digestion and metabolism. Calcium also is involved in nerve cell communication, it promotes healthy blood clotting and wound healing and it assists with muscle contractions.
