When it comes to weight loss, it’s not just what you eat, but also how you eat that counts. Try these tips to help you lose weight safely, sensibly and successfully.
- Use smaller spoons and plates. With big serving spoons and plates, it’s too easy to pile on the food and fill up the plate. Watch how much food youscoop, and make sure you can still see the border of your plate.
- Be picky.Tell yourself you don’t have to eat everything at dinner parties, buffets or conferences. Pick five “must try” dishes, one of which should include veggies. Take a small portion of these, and skip the rest.
- Eat until you’re 80% full.Tune into your satiety cues and train yourself to stop eating when you’re 80% full. You won’t feel“stuffed”, but you’ve had enough to eat and aren’t hungry anymore.
- Pause. Take a sip of water throughout the meal. Put your fork down between bites. Tell a story. Slow down your eating and give your body a chance to tell you that you’re full.
- Eat breakfast every day.Breakfast kick starts your metabolism and prevents overeating later in the day.
- Remember the protein.Feel fuller for longer by including protein-rich foods at every meal. Try fish, beans, tofu, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, low fat cheese, Greek yogurt or lean meat.
- Beat emotional eating. If you tend to eat out of boredom or loneliness, find healthy alternatives. Clean out your closets, go for a brisk walk, or give yourself a manicure!
